We look forward to our first hike in La Gomera. Claudia and Bernd from the SY STILL CRAZY invite us to a common walking tour. First we have to cancel, as Hans Peter has caught a summer flu, but on Friday's off in the morning on the bus. Udo, a German who lives here is part of a fiesta in the village Benchijigua, a 12-city souls. He is a great guide and knows the way each little plant, which is pretty much Lilian. It determines our tour and we start in the middle of the island to 1074 m above sea level / sea.
After two hours walking through a beautiful Barranco (ravine), we arrive at the right time, the Ermita de San Juan (small chapel) above Benchijigua. The service is soon to end and both beautifully decorated with fresh flowers, saints be taken out to the chapel. The small town goes to a procession through the valley. Musicians play drums and huge Holzkastagnetten and accompany the procession. After half an hour the Saints brought back and the festival takes its course. Now is a band playing island hits, the people are in line with a drink and grilled food. A peaceful gathering of young and old, locals and foreigners.
We leave the celebrating village community, as we have further to walk three hours to go before we reach the seaside Playa Santiago. Six years ago we have made our diving license and want to know how the village has changed. Beautiful everything still looks the same even in the village pub is the time seems to stand still.
Fully KO, as we are a bad cold, but totally satisfied after such a beautiful experience, we rise at 20.00 clock in the bus to San Sebastian. Once we are fully back on the dam will we do with Udo the next hike. In a beautiful memory we have here in the center of the laurel forest of La Gomera. We can hardly wait to dive into the enchanted forest.
