We are excited about our first hike in La Gomera. Claudia and Bernd from the SY STILL CRAZY invite us to a common walking tour. First we have to deny, unfortunately, as Hans Peter has caught a summer flu, but then you go on Friday morning on the bus. Udo, a German who lives here is part of a fiesta in the village of Benchijigua, a 12-strong place. He is a great guide and knows the way each little plant, which corresponds very Lilian. It determines our tour and we start in the middle of the island to 1074 m above sea / ocean.
After 2 hours of hiking through a beautiful ravine (ravine), we arrive at the right time, the Ermita de San Juan (small chapel) above Benchijigua. The service is soon to end and the two beautifully decorated with fresh flowers are borne out for the Holy Chapel. The small community embarks on a procession through the valley. Musicians play drums and huge Holzkastagnetten and accompany the procession. After half an hour, the Saints returned and the party takes its course. Now a band playing island hit, people meet for drinks and a barbecue. A peaceful gathering of young and old, locals and foreigners.
We leave the village community celebrating because we still have three hours to walk further to go before we reach the seaside in Playa Santiago. Six years ago we have made our diving license and want to know how the village has changed. Beautiful everything still looks the same, even in the village pub, the time seems to stand still.
Completely KO because we are both a bad cold, but totally satisfied after such an enjoyable stay, we climb at 20.00 clock in the bus to San Sebastian. Once we are fully back in business we do with Udo the next hike. In beautiful memories we have here in the center of the laurel forest of La Gomera. We can hardly expect to dive into the enchanted forest.
